Other Useful Information

PE:

PE days are Tuesday and Thursday.  Each term we will cover two areas of the curriculum,  generally one indoor and one outdoor.  We will draw expertise from the children who have strengths in these areas outside of the classroom.  During the summer, we will be swimming weekly.   Please ensure children have their P.E kit in school every day – with appropriate tracksuit or jumper/ jogging bottoms.  Please ensure all items are clearly named.

Outdoor Learning:

Our outdoor learning day is every other Monday.  Children should arrive in school in school uniform as usual but with outdoor learning clothes in a bag. This includes bringing long sleeved tops and full-length trousers. They will need to bring a change of clothing including socks, underwear and trainers, to ensure they remain warm during the colder Winter months! Don't forget a hat and sun screen in the hot summer months. Children will change when necessary, depending on the nature of the activity. Not all outdoor activities require a change of clothes.

Water Bottles:

The children should have a clearly named water bottle in the classroom. This should be a different bottle from their lunch drink and should be WATER only. The bottles should be taken home daily.

Reading:

In Year 5 we continue with Accelerated Reader, our reading programme. Please promote a love of reading and read regularly at home. Reading should be recorded in your child's reading journals.

In our daily reading lessons, we will be focusing on a book every 6 weeks. Our focus throughout each week will be reading together, predicting, summarising and clarifying any words that we may be unsure of the meaning.

Spellings:

This year, we are using a new programme for teaching spellings, ‘Spelling Shed’.  A progressive scheme with a programme for each year groupNew spellings are given on a Friday and you can support your children to practise these at home, along with accessing activities through the Spelling Shed website with your child's log-on details.

Times Tables:

Maths is taught daily. We  build on numbers taught in previous years – but extend our place value to the millions.   All topics in maths will build on the children’s learning from Year 4. In particular, their fluency in times tables will really benefit them when multiplying and dividing fractions, and converting to percentages.  To ensure that this fluency is maintained, we would like the children to continue daily practice of their times tables and related division facts.

How you can help support your child's learning:

  • Promote a love of reading and read regularly at home
  • Encourage a growth mindset and a can-do attitude. The power of ‘yet’!
  • Working maths into every-day life – counting out money at the shop, telling the time, helping to weigh and measure ingredients etc
  • Complete the maths homework and practice any times tables your child still does not know.
