 Year 2 Rowan and Hazel

Welcome to our Year 2 page. We have two classes in our year group – Rowan and Hazel Class. Our teacher in Rowan Class is Mrs Pettifer alongside our LSAs Mrs Lambarth and Miss Lambarth. Our teacher in Hazel Class is Miss Kendall alongside our LSA Miss Gilliam. In addition to this we have a shared Teaching Assistant, Lucy Marshall who works across both classes.

 Year 2 Weekly Timetable

Our topics throughout the year

Autumn 1 – Towers & Turrets

Autumn 2 – Winter Wonderland

Spring 1 – Muck, Mess & Mixtures

Spring 2 – The Enchanted Garden

Summer 1 – Wriggle & Crawl

Summer 2 – The Age of Discovery

As we arrive at school each day, our teachers have a challenge prepared for us to start straight away. We love these challenges as they get us settled and focused quickly with our learning. Next, we join the rest of the school for collective worship. We love to come together to sing, hear stories and learn about our theme of the week.

Our Master Reader Books for This Year

During Master Reader we focus on a class text learning how to use a range of reading strategies and comprehension skills. We focus on different types of questions such as, retrieval, prediction, inference and vocabulary.

English:

We always start with handwriting, modelling correct letter formation and presentation, which we then copy. Then we have a SPAG focus (spelling, punctuation, Grammar) This could be learning new grammar rules, such as noun phrases or identifying different parts of a sentence and improving it.

During the main part of the lesson, we have lots of opportunities to learn how to write a variety of texts using the Talk 4 writing approach.

Our Authors for the year:

Maths:

We always start our lessons with a quick fluency task, such as recalling numbers bonds, counting in different sequences or reciting our doubles. We have a short recap where we answer questions linking back to our previous learning. Then we move onto the main teaching objective. We learn how to use concrete and pictorial resources to help us answer tricky questions and spend a lot of time talking about our learning, in a move towards mastery.

Spellings:

We use 'Spelling Shed' as our spelling programme. We learn and practise a spelling rule and we are introduced to a new rule each week. We then have different activities to help us practise and learn them. On a Friday we will have the opportunity to show how many we have learnt.

In year 2, every afternoon is different. We like to investigate and experiment in science, design and create products in DT and sing and play instruments in music. At Mrs Bland’s we are also lucky enough to do outdoor learning (forest school) once a week. We learn how to build fires, stay safe in nature and different ways of building using natural materials.

Key information:

  • PE with our sports coach Danny Williams is on Thursday morning.
  • Dance is on Wednesday afternoon (in terms 1 and 4)
  • Outdoor learning is on Friday afternoon.
  • Gymnastics will be Friday afternoons (in terms 2, 3 and 5 and 6)

We suggest that the children bring in their PE kits on a Monday and are left in school for the week, just in case there are any changes.

PE kit includes; navy shorts, coloured PE t-shirt (ask your child’s class teacher which house they are in), navy tracksuit top and bottoms (essential for outdoor PE), spare socks, plimsolls or trainers and ear tape if needed.

Outdoor learning clothes need to be kept in school please. This should include; wellington boots, waterproof coat, and waterproof trousers.

Everyday essentials include; a book bag and water bottle. We encourage the children not to bring in big backpacks as we are limited on space in our cloakrooms.

Please ensure that all items are clearly named.

We always welcome and appreciate parental support with individual reading and trips/visits so please do let us know if you would like to help out regularly or even just occasionally.

How you can help support your child's learning:

  • Promote a love of reading and read regularly at home
  • Encourage a growth mindset and a can-do attitude. The power of ‘yet’!
  • Working maths into every-day life – counting out money at the shop, telling the time, helping to weigh and measure ingredients etc

Many thanks for your continued support.
