Discovering every child's sparkle and
shining a light on their brilliance

Welcometo The Burghfield Common Federation

Executive Headteacher’s Welcome

Welcome to Mrs Bland’s Infant and Nursery School and Garland Junior School. Our schools are now Federated - known as The Burghfield Common Federation, under one Executive Headteacher and one Governing Board.

Our schools are richly diverse and happy schools where the children are at the centre of all we do. We believe a good education is so much more than just academic success, it is about inspiring children to grow into responsible young people who are confident and ambitious, who develop a love and thirst for learning and who are well prepared to move onto the next stage of their education in modern Britain. All staff and governors are dedicated to raising the standards of achievement for all children; we are committed to ensuring children achieve their full potential and enjoy their learning.

By creating a caring and supportive environment where each individual is valued and by offering a curriculum which offers creativity and challenge we encourage children to develop any talents or gifts, take a pride in all their work and receive an all-round positive school experience.

In addition to the varied and rich opportunities the children have in the classroom, we offer all children the opportunity to take part in weekly Outdoor Learning, visiting the local woodlands as well as our Forest School at the Garland site.  We also have a specialist sports coach and a specialist music teacher. When combined with our ever-improving facilities, we are well positioned to support every child to develop personally, physically, socially and emotionally; we all work together to champion the emotional welfare of pupils. This is a fundamental component for future success - ensuring pupils are confident in themselves, respectful towards others and ready to learn.

We are proud to be a fully inclusive federation of schools with a big reputation for putting children first and, even more so, we are proud of our pupils, who can go on to achieve great things.

Staff care greatly for every child and want the very best for all. Everyone is accepted and celebrated. As one Year 2 pupil said, ‘We all have different families and look different, but we treat everyone with kindness and respect.’

  • Personal development and wellbeing - Strong Standard                                                                           'Pupils benefit from a well-planned and highly effective programme for personal development and wellbeing. It is expertly adapted to meet pupils’ needs and has a powerful impact on all. The coherent, well-thought-out programme includes key elements needed to develop pupils’ character and skills. Personal development is firmly at the core of learning and is embedded throughout the school. Pupils appreciate that adults notice their talents, reflecting the school vision of ‘discovering every child’s sparkle’. Pupils are polite, articulate and proud of their school. Pupils speak confidently about their learning and understand how it connects to their lives.'GJS OFSTED Report June 2026
  • 'The school has high expectations of what pupils can achieve. Pupils are confident and highly positive learners who relish their learning. This is reflected superbly in their high attendance. The school’s values of perseverance, kindness, respect, good manners and teamwork are the cornerstone of everyday routines. This begins from the moment children enter Nursery, where they learn about the importance of being kind. Consequently, pupils are remarkably courteous and follow instructions with thought and great consideration. They achieve well across the curriculum.'

  • 'Expectations for behaviour are high for everyone. Leaders have embedded a new behaviour policy effectively, which is clearly understood by both staff and pupils. This means that pupils understand how they are expected to behave. Pupils who need extra help to manage their behaviour receive effective support. Leaders have established calm and orderly routines throughout the school.'                                                                                                                                                                                                                        'Leaders, including governors, explicitly understand the school’s strengths and have made pragmatic             decisions for improvement based on the needs of the pupils.'                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           'Pupils demonstrate a genuine enjoyment of learning. They engage positively in lessons                                and talk articulately about what they have learned.'                                                                                                            GJS OFSTED Report June 2026
Our Values: Community, Curiosity, Creativity, Challenge

Our Vision and Values

These are explored, embraced and promoted every day to instil high self-esteem and future success.

Our Values of Perseverence, Kindness, Respect and Good Manners and Teamwork, are celebrated with weekly 'Value Awards' for pupils who actively demonstrate our core values. Teachers give out 'WOW' awards for determined learners, there are also Reading Star Awards each week. House points are collected throughout the school to add towards the team total.

Our values are also upheld when things go wrong. The school has adopted a restorative approach to behaviour management which ensures that all children are listened to and valued. Restorative Practice also seeks to solve problems together as a team.
